ON THE NEWS: Turn up democracy

From The Star, 2 March 2011.

The Radio Demokratika compilation, featuring 12 diverse local acts, sees the MyConstitution Campaign cranking up the volume.

THE late Clash frontman Joe Strummer used to rally the masses with the unforgettable call-to-arms anthem: "This is a public service announcement! With guitar! Know your rights!"

The community-based series Frinjan has taken heed of Strummer's declaration of people power as it gets a big music lift this weekend. The 18th edition of Frinjan at Laman Menara Jam, Dataran Shah Alam in Selangor this Saturday will see the soft launch of the compilation album Radio Demokratika which is a spin-off music project of the MyConstitution Campaign.

Initiated in November 2009, the MyConstitution Campaign has worked to educate Malaysians on the Federal Constitution, to teach them about their rights and the system of government. Forums and workshops have been held across Malaysia to raise awareness.

The Radio Demokratika compilation, featuring 12 diverse local acts, sees the MyConstitution Campaign cranking up the volume. Each artiste recorded an exclusive track for this project.

While scene veterans like punk outfit Carburetor Dung and folk singer Azmyl Yunor topline the Radio Demokratika compilation, take nothing away from notable contributions from The Panda Head Curry?, Thin Izzy, Temporary, Maharajah Commission, MC Stiff and An Honest Mistake. A broad range of genres are represented on this compilation - every act sharing a common voice to raise political awareness among the masses.

For the Radio Demokratika soft launch at Frinjan 18 this Saturday, the live acts to feature on stage include Barcode, An Honest Mistake, The Maharajah Commission, Thin Izzy, Lord Bobo’s Minions, Amirah Ali, The Casual Passengers, Moi Last Von, Fuchsia, Nusafara, Perewa Muda, Andenn Hassan, Ronasina and HOCY.

Frinjan stalls open at 5pm. Showtime is 8.30pm at Laman Menara Jam, Dataran Shah Alam in Selangor this Saturday. The Radio Demokratika compilation will be available at RM20 at the venue. More details at (facebook.com/radiodemokratika).
